
Nokia is a mobile telecommunications company, founded in 1865. Fredrik Idestam a mining engineer established a pulp mill in southern Finland and a second in 1868 in a near town of Nokia. In 1871 transformed his company to a shared company with his friend Leo Mechelin and the Nokia company was formed.
Nokia kept growing through the 19th century and in the 1960s the company branched out into electronics. In 1979 Nokia developed its first radio telephone by creating Mobira Oy and created the world’s first international cellular network, Nordic Mobile Telephone (NMT) service. In the 80s, Nokia launched its first car phone called the Mobira Senator.

In 1987 Nokia launched the first handheld mobile phone that would run on the company’s NMT network, Mobira Cityman. The phone also has its nick name “Gorba”. It weighted 760 grams and measured 183 x 43 x 79 mm. It was priced between $2,495 and $3,495, which equals $4763 and $6672 respectively in today’s money.

The 90s were the best for the Nokia company. In 1994 Nokia launched the 2100 Nokia mobile phone with the now iconic Nokia ringtone. In 1997 it launched Snake, one of the most widely recognized mobile games of all time. The Nokia 2100 sold more than 20 million worldwide, much more than the company had predicted.

In 994 the company also launched the communicator which offered features like email, fax, calendar and a massive display. The same year Nokia went on the to launch the 6110 and the 5110. These devices were followed by the 7110, which offered basic web functions, the 7650, with a built-in camera and the 6650, the company’s first 3G enabled smartphone.

In 2007 after glorious years Nokia began to go downhill when iPhone and various Android smartphones took to the market. Nokia then joined hands with Microsoft to develop smartphones running on the windows phone platform. Though the partnership the Nokia Lumina series of smartphones were developed but it wasn’t as successful as the pervious years.

On September 3rd, 2013, Nokia announced that its hardware department would be sold to Microsoft in a deal worth $7.2 billion. After eight months, the deal was completed and with it came the end of an era.
