BLACKBERRY OS

Blackberry is a proprietary mobile operating system that was formerly developed and manufactured by the Canadian company called blackberry limited for its blackberry line of smartphone handheld devices but is now currently developed by TCL(worldwide), BB MERAH PUTIH(Indonesia) and OPTIEMUS(India).
The first blackberry OS made its debut in January 19,1999, it was released for the pager blackberry 850. However, the OS was discontinued after the release of blackberry 10 in January 2013. The operating system provides multi-tasking and it supports the specialised input devices that have been adopted by blackberry. This OS is designed specifically for research in motion (RIM) blackberry devices and it runs on many blackberry variant phones such as the blackberry bold, the blackberry curve, pearl, and storm series.

The blackberry OS is best known for its robust support for push internet email. This push email functionally is carried out through the dedicated blackberry enterprise server (BES), which has versions for Microsoft exchange, Lotus domino and Novell group-wise.

Other mobile operating systems like android, Microsoft windows mobile and Symbian can all run on different brands of mobile phones. However, the blackberry OS is like Apple’s IOS in the regard as it can only run on blackberry phones. Traditionally, blackberry applications are written using java, particularly the java micro edition (Java Me) platform. However, research in motion (RIM) introduced the blackberry web development platform in 2010 which makes use of the widget software development kit (SDK) to create small standalone web apps made up of HTML, CSS. AND JAVASCRIPT CODE.

Blackberry was one of the most prominent smartphone vendors in the world, specialized to secure communications and mobile productivity and well-known keyboards on moat of its devices. At its peak in September 2013, there were 85 million Blackberry subscribers worldwide. However, Blackberry has since lost its dominant position in the market due to the success of the android and IOS platforms.

In 2013, Blackberry introduced Blackberry 10, a major revamp of the platform based on the QNX operating system. Blackberry 10 was meant to replace the aging blackberry OS platform with new system that was more in line with the user experiences of modern smartphone operating systems.

Those who opt to develop through java can use the blackberry java development environment (JDE)which is an integrated development environment (IDE) that comes with an editor, debugger, device simulator and memory viewer. The JDE can be downloaded from the blackberry website. It can be standalone Ora’s a plug in for eclipse, a graphical IDE. Other tolls that are used in conjunction with the JDE are the RAPC compiler and the sun java compiler.

There are three ways of installing apps on a blackberry os. Theses ways include: downloading the app from blackberry app world, over the air through the device’s built in browser and lastly, via the blackberry desktop manager.
